Description
The species of cherry tree and blossom depicted here is thought to have originated in the Himalayas is a close relative of the plum, apricot and pear trees. While many of todays modern cultivars, no longer bears fruit they have held great significance for generations. For over 1.000 years the Japanese have gathered to hold "Hanami" or feasts that are served beneath the beautiful blooms. They were of such significance when the Japanese wanted to give an important gift to the United States they chose these very blossoms to represent a growing friendship to the West in Washington D.C. To the Japanese they represent rebirth and the renewal of nature in Spring.
In "Night Blue", Mark takes all we rely on when we think of these cherry blossoms. He has not only deconstructed the color, but the blossoms themselves as they fly away in a swarm of straight lines
