Coliseum in Rome Although Christianity has its roots in ancient Rome, the religion in its infancy allowed for them to be hunted down as criminals. Christianity had some fundamental beliefs that defied the Roman religious structure. They refused to worship Roman gods and by believing all Christians were equal and all going to Heaven they upended long-held Roman beliefs Romans believed that only gods were allowed in heaven and all mortals were destined to an underworld.
Christians were routinely rounded up only to be released into a coliseum full of lions where they were torn apart for the enjoyment or the Romans. This ancient cross stands like a haunting sentinel as a testament to the beliefs of those first Christians, many who met their demise, in the structure behind.
